English GCSE and other qualifications provide a gateway to future success in post 16. English should be at the heart of the curriculum as through it, students learn how to communicate and how to understand themselves and others. Through the study of language and literature, students should develop as individuals and become more sensitive to others and the world around them. English should support our students’ understanding of fundamental British Values and promote SMSC appreciation.
Our English curriculum is designed to support learners to make progress at the most appropriate level for them. Many students arrive at Burton PRU working below expected levels. As such they are supported through our reading programme and our English curriculum to ensure that they are able to access learning both in English and the wider curriculum. The English curriculum is purposefully adapted to support learners working towards challenging qualifications.
